It goes without saying that RuPaul is truly one of the biggest and most loved celebrities out there. And she could probably cameo on any TV show she wanted to.
But of course, this was not always the case. In fact, Ru was once rejected from doing a cameo on one of the biggest TV shows of the ’90s: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,
According to David Steven Simon, one of the show’s co-executive producers from 1992–96, it was actually Will Smith who turned down the idea. David talks to journalist Thea Glassman for her book Freaks, Glicks, and Dawson’s Creek: How Seven Teen Shows Transformed Television, People report.
At the time, Ru was breaking into the mainstream with her 1993 hit song “Supermodel (You Better Work)” and David brought up the idea of having her cameo while pitching ideas for upcoming episodes.
David further added that Will is not known for rejecting ideas, but he rejected that idea, saying, “I remember he said it would be a really bad idea.”
According to David, he remembers that Will was against having drag queens on the show. Eventually, he told Will, “Okay, okay. We don’t need to do that,” and dropped the idea of keeping the Rue on.
David speculates that Will was against it because it might hurt his image, and added, “The reason he said no was his image. Period. The end.”
While Ru might have missed the chance to appear fresh PrinceThey had a full-circle moment when they performed Will’s daughter Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” during the lip sync between Alyssa Edward and Roxxy Andrews in Season 5. RuPaul’s Drag Race. The lip sync has, of course, become one of the most iconic moments in the HerStory series.
