Recently, there have been whispers that the San Francisco 49ers could end up trading quarterback Trey Lance.

He began the previous season as their starter, but an ankle injury prematurely ended his year in Week 2, with Jimmy Garoppolo suffering a season-ending foot injury, leaving Brock Purdy as the starter. became.

Furthermore, another reason for such rumors is the fact that the 49ers brought in Sam Darnold to provide another option in their QB room.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport says trading Lance makes sense because it would be a bad look if he, the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, ended up as the team’s third-string quarterback.

Many feel that San Francisco traded up for that No. 3 pick and took Lance in the first because they weren’t completely sold on Garoppolo being the championship signal-caller.

He led them to Super Bowl LIV, but despite holding a 20–10 lead in the fourth quarter, the Niners lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Lance has played just eight games in the NFL so far, and so it’s hard to tell what he could realistically become, although many feel his ceiling is high.

Purdy is clearly more ready now, but he is recovering from surgery for a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, and he may not be ready for the first week of the 2023 season.

The 49ers are in no position to develop a young QB like Lance for a better tomorrow, as they currently have arguably the best roster in the NFC, if not the entire league.
