At this point, all hope seems to be gone for the St. Louis Cardinals.
The team entered Saturday’s doubleheader against the New York Yankees with a 33–47 record, and 10 games out of first place.
All the progress that was made in May has been destroyed.
And so, as the trade deadline approaches, it’s very likely that the team will look to trade off some pieces, especially players with expiring contracts.
On Friday, MLB Network insider and St. Louis native Greg Amsinger commented on what the trade deadline could potentially look like for St. Louis and how they could eventually prepare for 2024.

Amsinger noted that now is a good time for the Cards to reset and capitalize on their impending free agents, while also noting that there will be several free agent starters they can choose from this upcoming winter.
Amsinger predicted that St. Louis would trade Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery, both of whose contracts are expiring.
He predicted that if Flaherty is traded to the Los Angeles Angels he could benefit from homecoming and would give him the No. 2 starter to go next to Shohei Ohtani.
He also pointed out that Tommy Edman could be a trade piece that teams might be interested in and said that the Texas Rangers are a team that could use someone like him who can play across the diamond.
Amsinger believes that if the Cardinals take advantage of this opportunity to get some prospects back and possibly even some pieces for next year, they may still have a chance to win the NL Central in 2024. .
