Cousins finished his fifth year with Minnesota, leading the Vikings to the NFC North division title and the No. 3 seed in the conference. Apparently, the front office in Minnesota is also questioning the move on Cousins. According to Mike Florio there was talk about possible Vikings-49ers The business centered around the cousin.
“Apparently, in the scouting combine, there was some chatter, there was some noise, among people within the broader league structure, not the media, but people in the league about Cousins being traded to the 49ers,” Florio he said. “It was a hot topic in Indianapolis at one point.”
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan was with him Father Mike’s staffer when Washington drafted Cousins in 2012. Therefore, an underlying relationship between Cousins and Shanahan could benefit the Niners if it were to happen. Looking at it closely, Cousins is not an automatic bet to get San Francisco closer to its ultimate goal of lifting a sixth Lombardi trophy.
The difference between Cousins and Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t that big. Jimmy G has moved on, but the two are comparable. Garoppolo was criticized for some errant passes and not moving the ball downfield enough during his 49ers. Cousins isn’t exactly a mistake-free QB and has a cloud of big game failure hanging over his head. He’ll post big numbers, but rarely in the biggest moments/games.

What will this mean for the rest of the cubby room in San Fran?
If you’re the Niners, is this your chance to move on from Trey Lance? They could give up other assets, but there is also the reality that Cousins will be due a new contract after next season. Cousins turns 35 in August, so the Niners should consider giving up younger players or draft capital for a QB who can walk away after one year. This business makes little sense for SF and doesn’t seem like something they should be seriously considering. San Francisco is poised and built to win at almost every position except QB. Lance and Brock Purdy are both young with minimal experience. But Cousins doesn’t feel like fixing all of the Niners’ woes, despite his relationship with Shanahan. Kirk Cousins would be the 49ers wisest to hit the market.
Cousins are nice, but that’s not a life-changing addition. Not even for a team that is now poised to win. Acquiring him doesn’t guarantee the Niners anything other than what they’ll get paid at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.
