A trip to China turns into a wild (and hilarious) journey of self-discovery in the new trailer for “Joy Ride,” the directorial debut of “Crazy Rich Asians” co-writer Adele Lim. The upcoming film stars “Emily in Paris” actors Ashley Park and Sherry Cola as best friends Audrey and Lolo, who go on a business trip to China with hopes of finding Audrey’s birth mother along the way. However, their itinerary falls apart when they meet a drug dealer on the train who takes them and their friends, Lolo’s cousin Deadeye (Sabrina Wu) and Audrey’s former roommate Kat (played by recent Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu) takes him on a dangerous operation. In one of the funniest scenes in the trailer, the friends try to dispose of all the drugs as quickly as possible by swallowing them, and hiding them – and – in their bodies. “Just push, pull… I mean twist it!” Lolo encourages a frustrated Kat as she tries to remove the bag she has in her butt. “It’s not Bop It, it’s my ass!” she replies. “Joy Ride” made its world debut on March 17 at the SXSW festival in Austin. During an interview with Vanity Fair, Lim shared that her goal was to make a film in the vein of “The Hangover” and “Bridesmaids” that put the spotlight squarely on young Asian women. “There’s a certain way that Asian American women are portrayed especially in TV and film — there’s a lot of foreignization and fetishization,” she explained. “We really wanted to tell a story inspired by our friendship and our friends, and have characters who were dirty and thirsty and just pieces of work.” The end result appears to be a no-holds-barred comedy about friendship, finding your roots, and having a lot of fun along the way.
