The New York Yankees came out swinging Monday night and gave the defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies a night to forget.
New York won by an 8–1 final as Nestor Cortes earned his first win of the 2023 season.
The Bronx Bombers also chased the Phillies, starting Taijuan Walker, allowing four runs off the veteran right-hander and knocking him out of the game after only 4.1 innings.
In the center of it was second baseman Gleyber Torres.
Torres hit a solo home run off Walker in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 3–0 ballgame.
It was also his 100th career home run.
MLB posted a video of the highlights on Twitter.

Torres definitely swings this ball.
With the short right field porch at Yankee Stadium, the ball went a long way.
Ultimately, Torres hit a chord with this swing and experienced a moment he would never forget for the rest of his career.
The home run was Torres’ second run of the season.
For his career, the Yankees second baseman and slugger had a .265 batting average, 11.5 WAR, 314 RBI, and an OPS of .789.
He also has a career OPS+ of 115.
And with his home run, he helped the Yankees continue a miserable stretch for the Phillies, who are still winless after getting swept by the Texas Rangers over the weekend.
The Yankees would go on to win the Series on Tuesday and try to continue the Phillies’ bad luck.
