Call up veteran DFA Darin Roof, prospect Casey Schmidt

san francisco giants Designated infielder/outfielder Darin Roof for assignment on Tuesday and called up infielder Casey Schmidt, the No. 4 prospect in the organization.

Schmidt’s first appearance would be his major league debut. was 24 Giants‘ Second round selection in the 2020 draft from San Diego State

Ruf, 36, batted .261 in nine games in his second stint. Giants, who traded him to the Mets at the deadline during the 2022 season. The Mets released Roof on April 2 and the Giants Signed him to a minor league deal on April 8. He is a career .240 hitter with 67 home runs.

Schmidt is batting .313/.352/.410 in 32 games at Triple-A Sacramento this season. Schmidt has primarily played third base in the minors, but also pitched 512 career innings at shortstop.

Giants Outfielder Cal Stevenson was also selected for Sacramento. He was hitless in 12 plate appearances, allowing three walks and one run in six games.
