Handed Major League Baseball new York Yankees Manager Aaron Boone was handed a one-game suspension and an undisclosed amount fine on Friday for his “recent conduct” towards the umpires
Boone will serve the suspension on Friday night, when Yankees Open a three-game series at home against the San Diego Padres
Boone was ejected on Thursday midway through the third inning of New York’s home game against the Baltimore Orioles. He argued with umpire Edwin Moscoso about his strike zone, claimed that the umpire had already missed four calls, and continued to yell after Moscoso was ejected.
It was Boone’s fourth ejection of the sophomore season. He has been ruled out of 30 matches since taking over Yankees manager in 2018
Three of his ejections have occurred in the last 10 games, including Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds and Thursday. The major league record for managerial ejections in a season is 11, having happened five times, most recently Bobby Cox in 2001. Cox was fired more times than any manager in his career.
Speaking to reporters Friday afternoon before the suspension was cut short, Boone addressed the reputation he was building.
“I think I’ve earned that reputation,” Boone said. “Do I think it’s going to lead to a quick hookup? Not necessarily. I think (Thursday) night was quick, but it could be a one-off. Maybe I’m delusional and it’s more important than I thought.” did more
“It’s happened a few times this week and I don’t want to be evicted and hopefully I can start a long streak of not getting evicted. I’m not necessarily scared, but no, it’s not my intention to be evicted and I Don’t want to, and hopefully I won’t for a while.”
Yankees It had not yet announced who would manage the team on Friday night. Bench coach Carlos Mendoza will be next in line
